Nigerians have reacted after the name of the immediate past Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, was not included in the list of ministerial nominees submitted to the Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.

We reported earlier that Buhari submitted a list of 43 nominees to the Senate for screening and approval on Tuesday.

Many Nigerians expected the name of Ambode to appear on the list after he obeyed his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC’s directives and handed over to Babajide Sanwo-Olu after one term as Lagos Governor.

However, he was not named in Buhari’s list submitted on Tuesday.

Immediate past Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari over the inclusion of Festus Keyamo in his ministerial list.

Keyamo, who hailed from Delta State, was among the list of Ministerial nominees sent to the senate alongside Gbemisola Saraki, Godwill Akpabio, Lai Mohammed.

Reacting, Uduaghan in a statement by his media aide, Monoyo Edon, commended Buhari for transmitting his ministerial list in what he described as record time saying, “he yielded to the masses’ pressure to name a cabinet before the Senate goes on long recess.”

The statement read: “For us in Delta State, Festus Keyamo‘s appointment did not come as a surprise to us. Festus has distinguished himself and has shown capacity in his previous post as spokesperson of our Presidential Campaign Council.

“His appointment is very welcomed to the APC family in Delta State.

“Some of my brother former Governors and other nominees that made the cut have something tangible to contribute to the Next Level program of Mr. President. I know them and I am sure they can function creditably well with any portfolio given to them at the end of the day.

“President Buhari has, on several occasion showed that he listens to the masses, whom he holds their mandate so passionately. We are all happy that his cabinet would be named in a matter of days after the National Assembly successfully screens all of them.

“President Buhari is committed to the success and development of this country. We have seen that with the kind of persons he has chosen to serve with him in this government.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the Ministerial list released by President Buhari as colorless, stagnant, uninspiring and does not convey any sense of hope or purposeful governance under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement released by its spokesperson Kola Ologbondiyan, the party said that the list is replete with incompetent individuals who failed in their erstwhile ministerial assignments and left their ministries in a shambles. Indeed, such a ministerial list can only come from leadership that does not have the mandate of the people.

It is a complete waste of time and cannot fulfill the expectation of Nigerians. The list has further shown President Buhari and APC’s insensitivity and disdain for Nigerians and it does not in any way reflect their hope and eagerness for a better Nigeria.

Furthermore, in recycling failed yesterday’s men for today’s assignment, President Buhari and the APC have left no one in doubt that they have no vision to move our nation out of the economic and security predicaments into which they have plunged us in the last four years.

A committed and responsive leadership would have widely consulted with Nigerians before compiling a ministerial list, given the current situation in the country.

If, indeed, President Buhari and the APC mean well for Nigerians and are interested in revamping our critical sectors, they would not have ended up with a list of those who will help conceal the huge corruption in the Buhari administration in the last four years, as well as those who will assist in channeling funds to individuals and groups used by the APC to rig the 2019 presidential election.

Strangely, the list has no space for the youths demography, those to whom the future is said to belong” The PDP further stated that the only way Nigeria can come out of her present economic and security quandary, is through the retrieval of Atiku Abubakar’s stolen Presidential mandate at the tribunal.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan has said that the screening and confirmation of the nominees would begin on Wednesday.

He added that other legislative activities in the chamber would take back seat to ensure the speedy completion of the important assignment.

Lawan said this after reeling out the list on the floor of the upper legislative chamber of the national assembly on Tuesday.

“The screening of the ministerial nominees will commence tomorrow morning. All other legislative activities will take back stage for this very important national assignment” he said.

President Buhari sent 43 ministerial nominees for confirmation. Some of those who made it back are Rotimi Amaechi, ex-minister of transportation; Mohammed Bello, ex-minister of federal capital territory (FCT); and Chris Ngige; ex-minister of labour and employment; and Abubakar Malami, minister of justice among others.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has said his chambers is not representing musician Timi Dakolo and his wife Busola.

The human rights lawyer noted that he only intervened when the family expressed fear over their petition. Falana clarified his position on the matter this afternoon following conflicting reports that he had taken up the case.

Falana clarified his position in the matter in a text message to The PUNCH on Tuesday.

Our correspondent had reported that the lawyer said the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had ordered the transfer of the case between the Senior Pastor of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly, Biodun Fatoyinbo, and the Dakokos to Lagos.

He said this was because the Dakolos were the first to submit a petition to the police over the rape allegation against Fatoyinbo.

He said the IG also asked that the petitions of the two parties be consolidated. Explaining how he came into the matter, Falana said he was contacted after the Dakolos had written their petition.

He said:-

“They wrote their petition before contacting us. When they met us, they expressed the fear that their petition might not be investigated. We intervened by requesting the police authorities to investigate the complaint.

The IG has already granted the request. I confirmed the position to you yesterday (Monday).”

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has pointed out two occasions he could have lost his job in the past.

According to him, he made a pact with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), to qualify for both the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations or be sacked.

In the two instances, Rohr qualified with a game to spare.

The German is now confident enough, to agree such terms with the NFF going forward.

“Like I did in my first contract; I stated if I don’t qualify for the 2018 World Cup my contract is finished and I accepted it. I am happy that we qualified with a match to spare then.

“I also accepted in the extension of my contract after we lost our first qualifying match at home to visiting South Africa in the 2019 AFCON qualifiers that if I don’t qualify this team for the AFCON finals in Egypt, the NFF can sack me. I am also happy to say that we qualified before the last qualifying match was played.

“I accepted all the time these challenges. I believe for me and my employers this should be the same for the future,” Rohr told SportingLife.

Paul Ibe, Spokesperson of Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nomination list sent to the Senate for approval.

Ibe accused Buhari of deflecting the attention of the country from the clash between Shi’ite and police with the release of the ministerial list.

He said Buhari used his 43-man ministerial list to deflect the narrative of the ‘avoidable’ death of about 13 persons during a Shiites protest against the continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

“Buhari releases ministerial list ostensibly to deflect the narrative of the avoidable deaths following the Shiites protest of Monday,” Ibe tweeted.

The protest on Monday, July 22, claimed the life of a deputy police commissioner, Umar Usman, who was in charge of operations at the Federal Territory Police Command, a journalist with Channels Television Precious Owolabi and about 11 Shiites.

President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, had confirmed that Buhari sent list of Ministerial nominees to the Senate for approval.

He had confirmed the receipt of the list during plenary session and went on to reel out the names.

Among the ministerial nominees, Buhari listed former Ministers such as Chris Ngige, Hadi Sirika, Rotimi Amaechi, Adamu Adamu, Mohammed Adamu, Babatunde Fashola and Lai Mohammed.

Others in the list are Uche Ogah, Emeka Nwajuiba, Sadiya Farouk, Musa Bello, Godswill Akpabio, Sharon Ikeazor, Ogbonnaya Onu, Akpa Udo, and Adebayo (Ekiti).

Also, Timipre Sylva, Adamu Adamu, Shewuye (Borno), Isa Pantami, Gbemi Saraki, Ramatu Tijani, Clement Abam were also declared as part of the nominees.

An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, sentenced two men Ayodeji Akinhanmi,34 and Arowolo Hammed, 34, to three years imprisonment each, for stealing valuables worth N96, 500.

The Magistrate, Mr Olakunleyin Oke said that with the evidence before the court, the prosecution proved its case beyond doubt.

Oke held that the defendants were guilty of the two-count charge of break-in and stealing.

He, therefore, sentenced the defendants to three years imprisonment each without an option of fine.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. OluBalogun Lawrence, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Jan. 31 at about 2:30 a.m. at Oke-Ilewo in Abeokuta.

Lawrence alleged that the defendants burgled two shops and stole valuable items.

According to the prosecutor, the defendants entered into MM4 Hair Clinic Shop and stole four clippers, standing fan and a wristwatch.

He said the property belonged to Mr Aderowoye Mubasiru.

Lawrence said the duo also broke into another shop belonging to Mrs Fagbenro Saidat and stole one gas cylinder valued at N10,000, rice and a blender, all worth N24,000.

According to him, the offences contravene Sections 319, 431(1)(2), 383, and 390(9) of the Criminal Law of Ogun, 2006. (NAN)

Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev has died at the age of 28 following injuries suffered in his IBF light-welterweight fight against Subriel Matias.

Dadashev was reportedly unable to walk to the dressing room after his bout was stopped by trainer Buddy McGirt at the end of the 11th round on Friday.

He was hospitalised with bleeding on the brain and underwent emergency surgery but failed to recover.

The Russian Boxing Federation say they have opened an investigation.

Secretary general Umar Kremlev suggested there was “some kind of violation”, adding in a statement: “We lost Maxim Dadashev. He was our young prospect.

An Enugu State High Court, presided over by Justice K.I. Okpe on July 22, 2019 sentenced a pension fraudster, Akpudili Anayo to six years in prison for a N13million fraud.

The Enugu Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC had charged Anayo with forgery, impersonation, conspiracy and stealing.

He had on April 8, 2019 pleaded “guilty” to the six counts preferred against him when he was arraigned, and he was convicted, accordingly.

Anayo’s journey to prison started when the Enugu State government petitioned the EFCC alleging fraudulent transactions traced to him. The State Executive had on May 3, 2017 directed that the May, June and July 2017 pension/salaries of the state pensioners and three other agencies of the state government be paid by cheques after physical verification.

However, at the end of the verification exercise, it was revealed that the convict who was an Ad-hoc staff for the verification exercise, in charge of the system computing the names of the verified civil servants in the state, conspired and used the bank accounts of three fake pensioners: Ngene Patrick Somtochukwu, Ani Ifeyinwa and Patience Christian Chimezie, domiciled in Fidelity, Stanbic IBTC and First banks respectively to divert funds meant for the pension and salaries of the civil servants in the 17 local government areas of Enugu State.

One of the counts reads:-

“That you, Akpudili Christian Anayo sometime in June 2017, at Enugu State within the jurisdiction of the High Court of Enugu State stole the sum of N5,034,435 (Five Million Thirty Four Thousand, Four Hundred And Thirty Five Naira) only, through Christian Chimezie Patience, Fidelity Bank account, property of the Enugu State government pension Board and you thereby committed an offence stealing contrary to Section 342 of the Criminal Code Law of the Enugu State, Cap. 30, Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2004 and punishable under Section 353 of the same Law”.
