Manchester United are interested in signing Issa Diop and willing to pay £45m plus a player for the West Ham defender, Sky Sports News understands.

West Ham are adamant that Diop is not for sale and it is believed they would not even listen to offers of less than £60m.

Diop played 38 times last season after the Hammers signed him from Toulouse a year ago for £22m.

United’s top priority is signing a centre-back this summer and they have been told by Napoli that Kalidou Koulibaly would cost about £100m while Leicester value Harry Maguire at £80m.

Former United manager Jose Mourinho singled out Diop for praise when his side lost 3-1 at West Ham in September last year.

As well as a centre-half, United are intent on bringing a new right-back to Old Trafford to replace departing club captain Antonio Valencia and are preparing a second bid for Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka after their first £40m offer was rejected.

President Muhammadu Buhari has charged Nigerian universities to intensify efforts at making discoveries and inventions that can assist the development of the country.

He made the call on Saturday in Dutsinma, Katsina State, in his address at the fourth convocation of the Federal University, Dutsinma (FUDMA).

The president, represented by Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, a former Deputy Governor of Kano State, said, “Research, critical thinking, moral dispositions, discoveries and inventions should find natural habitats in our universities, as they do in several other universities in the world.

“Universities are supposed to be strong drivers of the country’s development initiatives for sustainable development,” he said.

Buhari challenged the universities for being slow as regards discoveries and inventions, NAN reports.

“It is not heart-warming that in our over 58 years of independence, Nigerian universities are slow in discoveries and inventions,” he said.

He, however, said that his administration would continue to do everything possible to improve structures and facilities in the institutions, and to enhance learning by training the required manpower through various interventions like TETFUND.

Buhari also urged FUDMA to partner with the Sokoto River Basin Development Authority to produce improved agricultural varieties and give the required scientific and extension support to the local farmers.

He said that this would enhance the farmers’ productivity and economic viability.

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has lamented the poor state of education across the states of the federation.

Mr Adeyemi Azeez, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the association made this known in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.

Azeez called on all governors of states (both new and returning) to immediately set up visitation panel to all higher institutions of learning.

Azeez noted that it was imperative to make the remark about the country’s educational sector after a general overview from all the states of the federation, NAN reports.

“As it is obvious that only a sincere, dedicated and purpose driven government at states level can bring a clear repositioning to the education sector.

“NANS calls on all governors of states (both new and returning) to as a matter of urgency and necessity, set up visitation panel to all higher institutions of learning.

“This will avail the government with detailed state of each campus and proffer realistically workable solutions to address the challenges,” he said.

He noted that the president of NANS, Mr Danielson Akpan had also described as disheartening, a situation where education that was free and accessible in the days of today’s leaders, is now unaffordable to the sons and daughters of the poor.

He said that most classrooms, laboratories and libraries had become ill-equipped in recent times.

Azeez, however, commended Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun for declaring a state of emergency in the education sector of the state, during his inauguration speech on May 29.

The association, however, implored the governor to make his declaration a complete reality and not just a mere pronouncement.

New photos of Lizzy, the lady that was saved by Lagos cleric, Pastor Tony Rapu, have been shared by the man of God.

While celebrating Father’s day, Pastor Tony Rapu dedicated the day to Lizzy, whom he referred to as his spiritual daughter.

He wrote:-

Father’s Day 2019 is dedicated to my spiritual daughter Lizzy who turned 26 in February.

Even though God is ‘Father’, many do not have a positive association with that word because they were raised in dysfunctional homes. For them, ‘father’ triggers painful memories.

So this Father’s Day, let’s be sensitive to those from difficult and painful backgrounds. Many still yearn for positive memories such as running to greet their dad when he returns home from work.

This never happened. Some yearn for the father-daughter dance at their wedding. This may never happen with their natural fathers.

Today, let’s reach out in compassion to the physical and spiritual needs of the fatherless, the neglected, abused and abandoned.

Let’s cultivate a sensitivity and compassion for children around us who grapple with instability at home. Let’s cherish especially those women who never experienced a father’s affection, by treating them with genuine love and dignity.

Look out for the Father’s Day series of 4 videos that capture Lizzy’s progress.

See What Will Be Done To You If You Buy Stolen Phone, Police Reveal

The Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Bala Elkana, has revealed the punishment that will be meted to whoever buys a stolen phone in Lagos.

While enlighten Nigerians on the consequences of buying a stolen phone, Bala said the minimum sentencing for offenders is 7 years and the buyer will get more jail years than the thief.

According to him:-

“Under our laws, it is quite a serious offence for one to buy stolen phones. The law even regards the buyer to be more culpable than even the thief. The punishment is more for the buyer than the thief.

The wisdom behind that is to discourage people from stealing because if there is no market where they would sell those stolen things, they would not steal them but because they have a ready market, they easily steal.

“This is why the law makes the punishment stiffer for the buyer. The person who steals may get three years punishment, while the buyer could get seven years imprisonment and at the end, he will lose the property once we trace it to him.

For a person to avoid buying stolen property, it is advisable that he buys things in the open market and not on the street or people who are just passing and not dealing in such wares.”

Explaining how a case of purchasing stolen phones can be checked, Elkana said:-

“The most important thing when we charge a buyer to court is to look at whether he has knowledge that that thing he bought was a stolen property.

How do we test the knowledge? What is the market value and how much did he buy it? If the market value is N100 and you buy it N10, automatically, you will know that you are buying a stolen property.

Secondly, we would check where he bought it. Was it in a regular market where such items are sold or he just bought it on the road from somebody?

“That is enough for him to know that he is not buying something that is genuine.

Thirdly, we would check the time of the day that he bought the phone. These are important things we look at when we are investigating to check whether the person has knowledge that the phone was stolen or not.”

Names Of Ministers: Buhari To Submit List To Senate Before July 2

Top-ranking lawmakers in Nigeria’s National Assembly said they were expecting President Muhammadu Buhari to submit a list of ministers that will form his federal executive council before or by July 2.

The Ahmad Lawan-led 9th Senate would upon resumption from its two weeks recess in July begin a speedy screening and confirmation of persons whose names are expected to have been submitted by the Presidency before the July 2 resumption of the upper legislative chamber.

A ranking senator told The Guardian, however, that at the moment, nothing is on the ground regarding the list of persons to be confirmed as ministers but was optimistic that within the two weeks of the Senate recess, the President would have submitted the list.

Another lawmaker who just got elevated from the House of Representatives to the Senate in the February 23, 2019 election said that although the President is still within a reasonable time if he submits the list before July, expectations are that President Muhammadu Buhari would make up for the time lost during his first term when he delayed the ministerial list for six months.

The lawmaker further noted that it is particularly very strategic and helpful for the President to meet the July timeline because the Senate might proceed on its annual end of session holiday at the end of that month to reconvene in September.

He was however optimistic that within the two weeks of the Senate recess, the President would have submitted the list.

The lawmaker further noted that it is particularly very strategic and helpful for the President to meet the July timeline because the Senate might proceed on its annual end of session holiday at the end of that month to reconvene in September.

“I believe that the President should take advantage of the three weeks the Senate would spend in session between July 2 and the end of that month by ensuring that before we come back from this two weeks recess, the ministerial list is ready so that we simply screen and confirm them within the three weeks that we are going to sit before we go on end of session recess,” the lawmaker said.

“Anything short of that would amount to dragging Nigeria back to the delay experienced four years ago because the Senate won’t resume until around the third week of September.”

“You Can’t Blame Only North For The Woes In Nigeria”– Fani-Kayode Cautions Ohaneze

$

I am amongst the strongest critics of northern hegemony and domination and nothing is happening today that I did not say would happen if Buhari was elected President both in 2015 and 2019.

Yet the truth is that we cannot blame everything on the north because southern leaders are their own worse enemies. We are weak, divided, petty, ignorant, gullible, naive, petty and cowardly.

Worse of all we behave like crabs in a basket: always pulling one another down and always attempting to eclipse and destroy our own brightest stars.

Northern hegemony and northern domination is manifest in every sphere and sector of the Nigerian space only because the ever-grovelling, ever-slavish, ever-quivering, ever-quarreling and ever-snivelling southern leaders, who are so comfortable with betraying and abandoning their own mid-stream, gladly allow it.

If we want things to change the first thing that we need to do is to accept the fact that southern unity, southern commanality of purpose, southern fraternity, southern co-operation and southern cohesion and understanding are fundamental pre-requisites to southern emancipation.

The secret to the remarkabke success of the north is their wholehearted appreciation of the power of unity and the importance of furthering their collective interest regardless of political party affiliation.

This is something that the south appears to be simply incapable of appreciating, achieving or enjoying. We are our own worse enemies.

‘Beware Of Another Civil War’– Ohanaeze Ndigbo Warns Nigerians

$

Nigerians have been warned to be cautious of another civil war looming as long as equity and fairness is denied some sections of the country.

President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Nnia Nwodo, who gave the warning in a statement on Saturday said with the current structural imbalance in the political spectrum of the country, the nation is heading towards collapsing violently.

The Ohanaeze chieftain said as long as the North sees no wrong in scheming other zones out politically, it will not augur well for the country.

The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has been accused of lopsidedness, which according to some quarters, has furthermore divided Nigerians along ethnic lines.

“There is no future for Nigeria. As long as the north decides to be unreasonable and unrealistic, this country can never get better,” Mr Nwodo said.

“The country is only heading for implosion as long as equity and fairness is denied some sections of the country. The only solution is restructuring or the country will eventually hit the rocks – if not today, tomorrow. What does it cost to be fair and live in peace?

“Certainly, nobody will blame anybody if emotion runs high and the thread holding the country becomes thin and snaps.

“No condition is permanent in life. There are ominous signs and the clouds are gathering. Let the remaining generation that witnessed the Nigerian civil war recant and save the country from the cataclysm that will envelop her if the upcoming generation are allowed to inherit the callousness and wickedness pervading the land now.

Nigerians beware of civil war,” the leader of the socio-cultural group warned.

The South-East region in 1967 proclaimed its domain a sovereign state, dissociating from Nigeria. Their actions led to the first civil war which dragged on until 1970 when the secessionists gave up and were reunited back into the country.

Another secessionist group, Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) championing the restoration of the Biafra State, has been proscribed despite the group being a non-violent one.

Meanwhile, a former Secretary to Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has told the people of the region to blame themselves for the political woes that has befallen them.

Wike Blasts PDP Senators, Reps Over NASS Election

$

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has delivered a damning verdict on most of the Senators and House of Representatives members elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over their roles in the election of National Assembly principal officers on Tuesday.

Most of them, he said, betrayed the party and are unworthy of trust.

He accused them of selling out on the positions of the party during the heated exercise.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, early Tuesday morning, endorsed Senator Ali Ndume for the senate presidency.

The party also instructed its members in the House of Representatives to support the ambition of Hon Umaru Bako to become Speaker.

Wike, according to impeccable sources, mobilised NWC members to push through the endorsements despite the initial reluctance of the party to do so.

It was gathered but for Wike’s frantic efforts, the PDP wouldn’t have endorsed Ndume or Bago for the National Assembly principal posts.

The PDP supported Ike Ekeremadu for deputy senate presidency. But despite the endorsements, Senator Ahmed Lawan won with 79 votes to Ndume’s 28.

This is despite the fact that PDP boasts of not less than 46 senators.

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was elected deputy senate president with 68 votes to Ekeremadu’s 37.

In the House of Representatives, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila scored 281 votes to knock out Bago with 76.

Yet, PDP members in the Lower Chamber are over 140, fuelling speculations most of them ignored directives of the party.

Speaking on the disloyalty of the PDP NASS members on Friday, Wike said they sold “out themselves for one plate of porridge.’’

He said it was the typical act of politicians, most of whom he said he does not trust at all.

The governor, while receiving visiting Bishops of the Anglican Province of the Niger Delta at the Government House, Port Harcourt said he rather trust only God who, he noted, never changes.

2019 Elections: INEC Results Collation Process Not Transparent – E.U

European Union Election Observation Mission on the 2019 general elections formally unveiled its report and recommendations at the weekend in Abuja.

The Chief Observer of the EU team, Maria Arena read to newsmen, excerpts of its reports which contained 30 recommendations to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Tribune Online findings revealed that the EU deployed over 91 observers to 261 polling units and 94 collation centres in 31 states of the Federation during the last Presidential and National Assembly elections.

It equally deployed 73 observers to 223 polling units and 81 collation centres in 22 states of the Federation for the Governorship, State Assembly and Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) Area Council elections.

Giving its verdict on the election, the EU Chief Observer said the electoral process, from voting, collation and final declaration of results were not too transparent. She admonished the Commission “to strengthen collation of results transparently to inspire confidence in the process.”

INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu in his prompt response said democracy was a work in progress and his Commission was determined to implement EU recommendations.

The EU observation in its report read in part: “Inconsistent numbers during collation, lack of clear checks and explanations, and insufficient public information undermined the integrity of the elections.
“Citizens did not have sufficient means to scrutinise results. INEC did not provide centralised information on the declared results for the different locations and has not posted complete results data on its website.
“Similarly, there is a lack of disaggregated results by LGA, ward or polling unit, which would allow for thorough checking of results.”

It recommended that “legal requirements be established for full results transparency, with data easily accessible to the public.

“All results, including those from lower levels, be immediately displayed at collation centres. Results forms from all collation centres be scanned and published on the INEC website by the time of the declaration of final results. Results forms from all polling units be published before the deadline for submission of petitions against declared results.”

Expressing concern over the postponement of presidential and national assembly elections, “five hours before polling was due to start on February 16, the EU recommended “organisational and operational capacity within INEC be considerably strengthened. Improve the planning, tracking, and the required human and material resources for timely and accountable operations. In addition, improve internal communication within INEC.”

The EU Chief Observer, however, admitted: “that INEC worked in a difficult environment and made some improvements.” To strengthen Nigeria democracy, the EU called for a national dialogue involving state institutions, parties, civil society and the media.

She said: “This needs to be urgently undertaken to allow time for debate, legislative changes and implementation well in advance of the next elections.” She further noted that such national dialogue for future elections was imperative to instil sanity in the process before the next general elections.

Asked by newsmen if in her judgement the 2015 general elections were better than the 2019 exercise, Maria Arena. said it was difficult for her to pass judgement.

“It is difficult to say one election was better than the other. What we can say is that there is room for more transparency. We need to improve on the system and it is a problem if we aren’t seeing improvement. If we want to sustain democracy, there must be more transparency in the process.”

The INEC chairman said the full EU EOM report and recommendations would be useful for future elections. “Indeed, the report is coming at the right time as it will feed into our ongoing review of the conduct of the elections.

“Let me assure you that the Commission will again quickly focus attention on the electoral legal framework in addition to several other areas of reform. We will study in detail all recommendations as part of our ongoing internal review of the 2019 general elections which we hope to conclude in the next two months.

“Immediately thereafter, we shall engage with the leadership of the 9th National Assembly on areas that require legislation while implementing aspects of the reform within the powers of the Commission in full consultation with stakeholders.”

Goods worth millions of naira were midnight of Friday destroyed at the popular Orita-Aperin market in Ibadan, the state capital.

The cause of the fire incident, which razed the market, is yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing this report on Saturday.

The Babaloja of Orita-Aperin, Mr. Abiodun Ahmed, while speaking, said that goods worth millions of naira were lost to the fire, adding that the cause of the incident was yet to be known.

He said: “The fire started by 12 midnight on Friday, and we immediately called on Oyo State Fire Service but unfortunately, when they got here, the nuzzle of their truck was not functioning, so we have to resolve to self help by putting out the fire ourselves, or else, the loss would have been more than this.”

Ahmed noted that most of the owners of the shops affected by the fire just bought goods into their respective shops, adding that, that was what made the total value of the goods affected by the fire to be much.

“The shops that were affected include shop of a jewelry seller, shop of a food ingredient seller, shop of a provision seller, red oil seller and herbs seller, among others, five million, six hundred thousand was the worth of jewelries that got burnt, and most of the goods affected in the shops of the herbs seller can not be replaced because they were ancient goods that can not be seen on market again,” he said.

Ahmed, however, appealed to the Oyo State Government to come to their aide because the loss was too much for the victims to bear.

One of the victims, whose shop was also affected by the fire, Latifat Adegbola, appealed to the Oyo State Government to assist them financially because the money they used to procure the goods that were lost was collected based on interest.

“All my goods has been consumed by fire and the remaining ones are useless, we are calling on the state government to come to our aide so that we can survive.”

A pepper and onion seller, Mariam Oladepo, while speaking, said she lost goods worth one hundred thousand naira to the inferno, adding that her shop has been razed by the fire and nothing remains for her and her children to feed on.
