The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, on Friday said Nigeria’s annual appropriation bill would be passed in three months under his leadership.

He spoke to newsmen after performing Friday’s Juma’at prayer at the State House, Abuja.

Lawan, however, said to achieve this, the executive and the legislature must work together.

The Senate President assured that if presented in September ending or early October, the budget would be passed before the December break.

“A month would be set aside for budget defense by MDAs”, Lawan added, warning that Senate not tolerate any delay by government parastatals.

Meanwhile, the 9th Senate had resolved to write an official letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, informing him that a quorum of the Senate had assembled and that its presiding officers have been elected.

The upper chamber also resolved to inform the international parliamentary bodies that a quorum of the Senate of the 9th National Assembly has assembled and was ready to receive any communication.

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had requested the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori, to retrieve the official vehicle identification plates from about 69 senators and 151 members of the House of Representatives who failed to return to the 9th National Assembly.

The FRSC Public Education Officer, Corps Commander, Bisi Kareem,said in a statement that :

“We have written to the clerk of the National Assembly to direct former lawmakers to return official number plates issued to them. We expect the clerk to reach out to them; we cannot get across to them ourselves, that was why we wrote to the National Assembly about it.”

Forty-two of the senators lost out in October last year at their parties’ primaries while twenty-seven others were defeated at the National Assembly elections.

Apart from former Senate President Bukola Saraki of PDP, Kwara Central, others expected to return their official vehicle number plates are Godswill Akpabio of APC , Akwa Ibom West; Nazif Gamawa of PDP, Bauchi; Rafiu Ibrahim of PDP, Kwara South; Tayo Alasoadura of APC, Ondo Central and Yele Omogunwa of PDP, Ondo South, among others.

When asked about the deadline for the return of the plates and sanctions for failure, Kazeem said he would not speak on that.

Findings have, however, showns that many former lawmakers and ex-officials were still using the official number plates.

The immediate past senator who represented Oyo South Senatorial District in the Eight Senate, Adesoji Akanbi, said the senators who were not returning to the National Assembly, were expected to return the number plates.

He said:
“The number plates have an expiry date, hence there is no basis for holding on to it after June 2019 because those who issued it said it’s between 2015 and 2019.

“Although some may just remove it and throw it away for record purposes, it is better to return it to the National Assembly management which distributed them to us.”

Plateau State governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Jeremiah Useni, has said June 12 presidential election was more credible that the 2019 presidential polls.

Mr Useni, who made this assertion on Friday after hearing on his governorship petition at the tribunal sitting in Jos, said that the adoption of June 12 as Democracy Day was long overdue in view of its importance to Nigeria’s history.

“To me, the June 12 election was more credible than the 2019 presidential election. We should have been celebrating June 12 long time ago as our democracy day. I am in PDP and I don’t want people to take June 12 as an APC affair, everybody knows what happened.”

Mr Useni regretted that it would have been better to deprive Mr Abiola the luxury of contesting the June 12 presidential election than annulling it, saying that the situation drew the country backward.

“some of us were not happy when the election was cancelled. Why did they allow him to contest the election if he was not ineligible? Why was he allowed to contest in the first place if proper screening was not done?” he queried.

He described democracy as a good system of governance but lamented that some of the actors in democratic practice are very bad.

Mr Useni noted that civilian administrators should take the courage of creating state and local government areas in the country to make democracy closer to the grassroots.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday met with Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Mr Bello, who declined comment on the meeting, however, vowed that he would get re-elected for another four years in office.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had fixed November 16 for the conduct of governorship election in Kogi and Bayelsa.

The governor dismissed the assertion that he might not secure the governorship ticket of All Progressives Congress, APC, for the election due to internal crisis in the state.

“I am the governor today and Insha Allah, l will return back as the governor for another four years, after the Nov. 16 election. As for the ticket, the analogy is that the tenant cannot send the landlord out of his house.

“So, APC in Kogi state was rebuilt by me, after the good job done by our late leader, His Excellency, Alhaji Abubakar Audu. After his demise, l came, rebuilt it from the scratch to what it is today.

“That is evident in the last outing of the party where we had 25/25, in the State House of Assembly. We also won 7 out of the 9 contested positions in the House of Representatives and two out of the three Senate seats in the Senate.

“So, anybody that is making such noise does not disturb me because, in market place, noise is allowed. You know, Kogi politics is the loudest. So, people must make noise and you can’t stop that,’’ he said.

Mr Bello added that he is confident of winning not only the APC primary ticket, but the state governorship election on November 16.

“l am very good with my party men from the local government to the national level. They know that l am the leader of the party in my state.

“I have built it and it is very strong. Anytime, any day, we will win elections in landslide. That l am going to win in the primaries is given by the grace of God, by which ever means, direct or indirect.

“Secondly, in the November governorship election, we are not just talking of wining, we are looking at the margins. The margin is going to be such that whoever comes far second, will be discouraged from going to court.

A gorilla has been accused of swallowing the N6.8 million in the Kano Zoological Gardens, according to BBC.

A finance officer at Kano Zoological Gardens has claimed that a gorilla swallowed N6.8 million that went missing under their watch.

The finance officer, according to radio station in the state, Freedom Radio, said the gorilla “sneaked into their office” and carted away the money before swallowing it.

The money was generated from tourists who visited the zoo during the Eid celebrations. The managing director of the zoo, Umar Kobo, confirmed that the money is missing and that the issue is being investigated.

“The issue is under investigations for now and I don’t want to say anything on the matter, many journalists have come to meet me but I don’t want to talk anything. What I can confirm is that money is missing,” he told the BBC Pidgin.

“Yes, it is true that money from five days of Sallah festivities is missing from the Kano zoo,” Abdullahi Haruna, police spokesman in Kano told BBC, adding: “As at now, we have arrested 10 members of staff of the zoo including the security man and those working in the finance unit.

Lagos state governor has announced a 100 percent increase in the allowances of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority officials (LASTMA).

The announcement of the salary increase was made when Sanwo Olu visited the LASTMA headquarters at Oshodi, Lagos.

He promised that the increase would commence from the end of July 2019 while also stating that LASTMA officials would be entitled to free health treatment.

“From the end of next month, we are going to double your allowance, from the end of next month. If you are earning N5,000 allowance, we are going to double it for you.

It is Lagos State tax payer’s money we are going to be giving to all of you so the citizens are going to be expecting a new, reformed and more civil LASTMA officers, Any LASTMA official that is on duty and has reported one form of illness or the other should be treated free of charge.”

Sanwo-also commended the officials for their service to ensure a free flow of traffic and traffic management in the state. He reminded them of his promise to rehabilitate bad roads in Lagos as he insists that the government would now be strict with traffic offenders.

LASTMA officials were tasked not to allow any offender go without paying fine saying, “if the person says he knows the governor, tell him to call the governor to pay the money for the offence.” Sanwo-Olu urged the traffic management officers to be civil when engaging road users.

“They (people) want a LASTMA officer that shows civility. Courtesy demands courtesy if you are going to even arrest or apprehend somebody, be courteous and respectful to them,” he added.

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Central Bank of Nigeria to blacklist any firm, its owner and top management caught smuggling or dumping palm oil into the country.

The presidential directive was disclosed by CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, at a meeting with oil palm producers on Friday, in Abuja.

Emefiele warned that henceforth, those caught smuggling palm oil into the country would be blacklisted from all banking businesses and would also be blocked from the foreign exchange market.

He said that this also included those who tried to smuggle in palm oil through Customs as “hydrogenated vegetable fats”.

He disclosed that close to about N30 billion had already been disbursed to those currently involved in oil palm farming.

The apex bank governor said that for those coming newly into the oil business, credit facilities would be extended to them through their banks and that Out-Grower schemes would also be organised.

“We want to make everybody understand how serious we are and also to emphasise that what we are doing to stop the importation of oil palm into Nigeria is a presidential directive that must be adhered to.

“Doing this also means that while we are stopping the importation of palm oil, we must do all possible to ensure that palm oil production is aggressively
increased in Nigeria.

“Like you all know, and I never cease talking about it that Nigeria in the 50’s and 60’s used to be the largest producer of oil palm in the world with a market share of 40 per cent.

“For one reason or the other, particularly because we found crude oil that even today by any analysis is cheaper than palm oil, we decided to abandon our God-given gift – palm oil.

“By doing that we lost jobs, our farmers lost jobs because we began to import palm oil from different parts of the world,” NAN quoted him as saying.

Emefiele said that the presidential directive also mandated CBN to expand and provide support to firms and individuals that wanted to expand the production of 10 different commodities in Nigeria.

The 10 products are rice, maize, cassava, tomatoes, cotton, oil palm, poultry, fish, livestock and cocoa.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba University Chapter has suspended its two month-old strike following the agreement between the union and the Taraba State Government, owner of the university.

Dr Samuel Shikaa, the ASUU branch Chairman, disclosed this shortly after a meeting of the union in Jalingo on Friday.

According to Shikaa, the offers that were given to the union by government were “partially considered and approved by our Congress” and that it was based on that strength that the strike was suspended.

The ASUU Chairman also stated that the implementation of some parts of the agreement had commenced.

The union, which directed its members to return to work immediately, also called on the students to resume for academic activities.

Shikaa expressed optimism that the government would fulfill its part of the agreement to ensure an uninterrupted academic calendar, henceforth.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the ASUU branch had embarked on strike on April 3 to press home their demands, including non-payment of earned academic allowances, lack of perimeter fencing, inadequate funding, among others.
