A Lagos High Court in Ikeja presided over by Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye has sentenced a former Chief Accountant of Vanguard Newspaper, Bhadmus Abiodun, to 7 years imprisonment.

He was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on an eight-count charge of conspiracy, forgery and stealing to the tune of N40.66million belonging to his employer, Vanguard Newspapers Limited.

The court also sentenced former circulation representative of Vanguard newspaper for Benin, Joseph Ejike Ezeobi, to three years imprisonment over his involvement in the stealing and forgery. They were jailed without an option of fine.

Prosecution counsel, Abba Mohammed, informed the court that Abiodun committed the offence in collaboration with the Vanguard Media Representative for Benin, Joseph Ezeobi. Mohammed added that Abiodun committed the offence alongside Ezeobi between January 20, 2006 and January 7, 2009.

The prosecuting counsel further informed the court that the convict and his accomplice had on various dates, illegally converted N4.52million, N18million, N18.14million belonging to Vanguard.

Mohammed said, “Abiodun and Ezeobi had on January 7, 2009 in Lagos, with intend to defraud the Complainant (Vanguard Media Limited), fraudulently converted N800,000 property of Vanguard Media Limited.

“Abiodun and Ezeobi had on November 21, 2007 in Lagos, with intend to defraud Vanguard Media Limited, conspired to forge a Wema Bank Plc deposit slip No. 0278679 purporting to be in the value of N740,000.00 dated November 21, 2007.

According to Mohammed, the offences are contrary to Sections 390 (7), 467 (2)(i) and 516 of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos State 2003. In his verdict over the case, Justice Ipaye held that the money Biodun and Ezeobi kept for themselves belongs to Vanguard newspaper.

The judge convicted and sentenced the accountant to seven years in prison on count one to eight. The prison terms for counts two to eight are to run concurrently.

Operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) have arrested a 41-year-old engineer, Festus Femi, for allegedly raping three pupils of the same secondary school.

The first victim, a 13-year-old Junior Secondary 2 pupil, stated that she met Festus through her classmate, who asked her in school to escort her to Festus’ house, and claimed he was her uncle.

On getting to the house, her classmate and Festus went out briefly, and on their return she told the victim that Festus wanted to have sex with her. The victim’s refusal and pleas of being a virgin fell on deaf ears.

Festus turned the volume of the sound system very high and raped her in the presence of her friend. He further threatened to kill her if she tells anyone.

The second victim is a 12 year old Junior Secondary 2 pupil. The same classmate took her to Festus’ house and told her that Festus wanted to have sex with her and he also raped her.

The third Victim, a 15 year old girl, is the same person that introduced the other two victims to the suspect. She stated that Festus was her former neighbour and each time he had sex with her, he gave her N500.

He also told her to bring girls for him and he would give her N300. She stated that so far, she had brought 5 underage girls to him. She further corroborated the first victim’s story on the rape and threat to life.

In a related development, a 51-year-old bursar of Government secondary School Dangara, Abaji- Abuja, was also arrested by NAPTIP officials for allegedly drugging, raping and impregnating a 15-year-old SS3 student.

The suspect, Luke Gabriel Ekundayo, was the victim’s guardian in school, and she spent short holidays in his house.

The victim, an orphan who was on Scholarship, was threatened by the suspect into having sex with him continuously, or he would tell her sponsors to stop paying her school fees. The rape continued until the victim got pregnant.

I was a friend that left my car for Tonto because she never had a good car to befit a celebrity as she claims.

She had a church invitation but didn’t have funds for the trip, I personally took Tonto to church, prayed with her for God to have mercy and turn around things. I personally paid in 4m to her account (i have proof) to facilitate the trip cause it was prayers answered.

On reaching the embassy, Tonto was not with her Visa fee.I knew she didn’t have the funds, I paid visa fee for 4 of us meant for the trip and also paid for the VIP lounge which she was not allowed to enter without payment.

Prior to this, Tonto borrowed 300k from me which she never paid until we got to SA. I personally brought my designer bags, clothes, Jewelries for Tonto to use for the event.

After the event, she started giving me attitude just because she never wanted to share any money with me. (take note it was a church event and nothing else) I was never upset with her cause money doesn’t matter at all to me. Tonto is a very pleasant person anytime she wants something from you.

After all Tonto did to me, guess what? she went ahead to blackmail me and my restaurant. The same restaurant she was eating from. She went to all the ladies in Abuja including the one that had a restaurant to promote them and also say negative things about my person.

Tonto was basically looking for all my enemies to make friends with. I did not complain?So why is she and some people upset because i am friends with Churchill? I can never inherit Tonto’s enemies because i know she’s not a good person.

A pregnant woman was burnt to death in a fatal motor accident that occured along Omi Adio, Ibadan- Abeokuta expressway today Tuesday July 16th.

According to reports, the deceased was traveling in a commercial vehicle that developed a mechanical fault when the shaft pulled off, causing the driver to lose control and run into a ditch after somersaulting several times.

The passengers were attempting to get themselves out of the bus when it went up in flames.

While the other passengers hurriedly made their way out of the bus, the pregnant woman who was unconcious at the time, became trapped in the fire that ensued.

The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, affirmed Uche Nwosu as the authentic governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) in Imo State.

The Apex Court struck out the suit instituted by Leonard Okolienta, challenging the judgments of the lower courts.

Okolienta had approached the Supreme Court, after his suits at the High Court and Owerri Division of the Court of Appeal were dismissed.

The two lower courts ruled that Nwosu was the AA’s standard-bearer for the 2019 governorship election.

Delivering the Judgment, the Supreme Court warned against antics to misrepresent the Judiciary.

A local government collation officer for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the presidential election, on Tuesday, named two agents of the ruling All Progressives Congress whom he accused of voting for others at the election.

The collation officer, Abubakar Abdullahi, said the agents are Isah Haliru and Ibrahim Mukhtar.

Mr Abdullahi was speaking during his cross-examination at the continuation of hearings of the PDP’s petition against the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the witness, agents of Mr Buhari’s APC at the polling unit where he supervised elections in Yobe State voted on behalf of the voters at the elections.

He added that APC electoral officers brought thugs who intimidated and harassed them during the elections.

“We tried to stop the APC agents, security officers and myself, from voting for the voters.

The APC ward councillor brought more than 10 people to harass me but I was saved by some elderly men in the village.”

Mr Abdullahi said he reported the matter to security agents at the polling unit.

He added during further cross-examination that the APC agents were arrested, though they were never prosecuted.

Mr Abdullahi said the incidence of electoral fraud at his polling unit was so grievous that he decided not to sign his copy of the result sheet, the form EC8C.

This allegation amongst others intends to strengthen the PDP’s point that the February 23 elections were marred by widespread irregularities, a constitutional basis for the nullification of elections in Nigeria.

Among the five major grounds upon which the PDP is anchoring its petition is its contention that Mr Buhari, who is the second respondent, was not duly elected by the majority of lawful votes cast at the election.

Though one of the states affected by cases of insecurity in Nigeria’s northern region, the APC emerged winners of the Presidential election in Yobe State with over 450, 000 votes more than those polled by the PDP which came second in the state.

While the APC polled 497,914 votes, PDP came second with 50,763 in the election.

The Oyo State Chapter of All Progressives Congress has urged Governor Seyi Makinde to explain the source of his N48bn asset made public on Monday.

The state chairman of the party, Mr. Akin Oke, said this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Iseyin on Tuesday.

“I don’t think I want to make comment on the issue, since I have no idea, but it raises a number of issues.

“He just declared what he has; how he came about the asset is not there,” Oke said.

The party leader said it would be too early to assess Makinde’s performance as governor, since he has so far spent just a few weeks in office.

“Going by my experience and exposure , I think it is too early to honestly assess a governor just after a few weeks office. I would rather wait till after 100 days or even after six months.

“To start assessing people after six weeks in office will be so unfair if one wants to be honest to his conscience,” he said.

Apostle Suleiman who spoke when he visited Governor Samuel Ortom in Makurdi the Benue state capital said all was not well with the country and there was urgent need to have the challenges tackled headlong. He said, “In Obasanjo’s letter, I did not see what he wrote there that has not been happening.

People must draw a line between politics and reality. He spoke the mind of Nigerians and should not be castigated.

“I learned some people are calling for his arrest, but before anybody arrests Obasanjo they should first arrest those who threatened the government by issuing a with 30 days ultimatum to the government over the suspension of the Ruga settlement plan.”

Apostle Suleiman commended Governor Ortom for choosing to defend his people at the peak of the herdsmen crisis in the state instead of his position or office as was common in the country stressing that such attribute was very rare among the majority of leaders.

“Many leaders would prefer to defend their seats and positions at the expense of their people in such situations, the path Governor Ortom took was capable of costing him his second term election but he never bothered.

Responding, Governor Ortom commended Apostle Suleiman for supporting the state through prayers and his N5million cash donation for the upkeep of Internally Displaced Persons in the state, describing him as a true friend of the state.

Ortom said the invasion of the state was for the purposes of occupation and not a grazing warning that “Benue would not accept open grazing, grazing reserves, Ruga or whatever because they are all in conflict with our Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law.”

Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has entreated his colleague leaders on the continent to improve its self-reliance arguing that there is no Father Christmas coming to develop the continent.

In line with the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda, President Akufo-Addo said African leaders must take charge of their destinies.

“There is no such ‘Father Christmas’. There is just us. Once that mentality is changed, then our relations with other people will become much more structured,” he said at the Africa Diaspora Summit last Thursday.

Ghana’s President also said Africa’s relationship with Europe had been heavily lopsided over the years.

“That relationship has enriched Europe but has not enriched Africa. We need to change that dynamic, and we can only do it by taking the correct measures for our future.

That is where my focus is… It cannot be right that the continent that has allegedly the wealthiest resources of the world is also the home of the poorest people on the globe. That disconnect is not a good one, and we need to work to change that.”

Again emphasizing the education of Africa’s youth, President Akufo-Addo said “once we find the means to do the educating of this population and giving it skills, then we are putting Africa on the path of very, very strong economic growth.

We can replicate what has been done in Asia if, like them, we maintain the discipline and correct analysis of what we need to do to move our continent forward.”

But President Akufo-Addo reiterated that Africa was not turning its back on the world in pursuit of self-reliance.

“We live on the same planet. We need the association and partnership with countries like France, the networks they have developed, their savoir-faire in all those areas that we can profit and benefit from.

It is for us to define that relationship that we want with the rest of the world.

We should not be caught up in a language or narrative that says that we are appendages to other people’s thinking and policies. That will not help us,” the President said.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has pledged to support the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in combating fraudulent mobilization of unqualified graduates for national service.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) EFCC also commended the National Youth Service Corps members for educating Nigerians on the dangers of corruption through the anti-corruption Community Development Service Groups.

Mrs. Adenike Adeyemi, the NYSC Director, made the information about the anti-graft’s pledge known in a statement at a Press and Public Relations event held in Abuja on Tuesday.

Adeyemi stated that the EFCC acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, made the pledge when NYSC Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim paid him a courtesy visit in his office recently at EFCC Headquarters, Abuja.

She added that Magu condemned activities of unpatriotic Nigerians who brought shame to the country through their desperate quest for wealth, including the Nysc: Efcc Begins Move To End Fraudulent Mobilisationsale of academic qualifications to unqualified graduates.

The EFCC boss then promised to collaborate with NYSC to checkmate illegal activities of such individuals.

Earlier, the NYSC chief had decried corruption in the country, adding that under his leadership, staff
and corps members would pursue the fight to get rid of the menace.

He appealed for EFCC support, “in NYSC’s quest to monitor the activities of some higher institutions that present unqualified graduates for mobilization for national service.”

Ibrahim said, “it is unfortunate that some institutions of higher learning, particularly in Cotonou, Benin Republic present to us people who didn’t go to the four walls of the university as graduates for NYSC mobilization.

“We are presently investigating some of such so-called graduates, many of whom cannot write or spell any word in English.”
